NGL Ladies Vets 2nd Team match v Leicestershire & Rutland

Priors Hall GC 31st July 2017

It was a delight to welcome the second team from Leicester and Rutland to play at Priors Hall on Monday 31st July. The weather was kind and we only had a slight drizzle at the end of the match. The course was in great condition with the greens playing quick but fair.

We were able to field a complete team with reserves  coming in at a late stage due to injuries.

Carol Collins (Kingsthorpe) and Bobbie Austin (Northants County) were our first pair out, Carol being bought in at the very last minute. They were drawn against a player who had dropped 4 shots in the last month and was obviously playing well which meant Carol and Bobbie were beaten on the long par 3 15th hole.

Our second pairing of Vicki Lyness (Pytchley Lodge) who had come down a shot and Jane Shearer (Northants County) had the advantage over their partners and won their match.

Elaine Mankelow (Peterboro Milton)  and Gina Boreham (Northampton) were drawn against an impressive pair who managed to win the match 7 and 6.

The 4th pairing saw the two captains playing against each other with the match going to the 18th hole. Gina Evans (Overstone) and Molly Hulatt (Rushden) lost the first hole but then stayed only one down with both Molly and Gina needing to sink some tricky putts to half holes. Drina Terzza (Captain of L&R) parred the 13th hole which gave the opposition a two shot lead. However at the 16th hole Gina managed to putt in from off the green to win that hole. The 17th was halved and so it came to the final hole which was halved meaning a win for Leicester and Rutland.

With the match standing at 3 wins to 1 in favour of the opposition it was down to the last four matches to turn the match around and that is exactly what happened. Jo Martin and Janet Leitch both from Elton Furze gelled well together and came in victors. Jean Bulteel (Northampton) and Wendy Mckie (Brampton Heath) had an excellent game and won 5 and 4. The penultimate pair of Barbara Stone and Trish Crighton both from Elton Furze battled to the last hole which ended in a halved match.

It now came down to the last match with the score 3 1/2 to 3 1/2 . Barbara Bird and new member Vanessa Morris both from Nene Park were able to finish their match on the 17th being two up.

This was a great result and thanks must go to all the ladies who played in the match which was played in a friendly but competitive way.
