NGL Ladies Vets 1st Team match v Lincolnshire

Kettering GC 3rd July 2017

Owing to other commitments Lema Townsend our match secretary had a busy time getting a full squad to play at Kettering on Monday 3rd July. However it was an enthusiastic team that played in pleasant weather on a very well presented course.

Gillian Curley and Angela Duck both from Northants County G.C. started the match off and had an excellent game with the honours  going back and forth, however in the end the Lincolnshire pair just managed to hole the putt on the 18th to win by one hole.

Our next pairing of April Owens (Staverton) and Yvonne Wilcox (Rushden) had quite a tight match and came to the last hole all square April had a tricky putt to win that hole but unfortunately the match ended all square.

Lema Townsend (Wellingborough) and Pat Silburn (Oundle) played an outstanding game with Pat sinking some great putts to win holes, this pairing seemed to gel well together and came out winners 6 and 5.

Heather Williams (Northants County) and Carol Dunn( Peterborough Milton) were our 4th pairing and came up against some really steady players who managed to finish the match on the 17th 3up with one to play.

Sue Wildman(Stoke Albany) and Maggie Childs (Northampton) came up against Nicky Plumtree an ex member of NGL Ladies Vets who knew the course quite well, however the match was tightly contested and came down to the 18th with the Lincolnshire pair being 1 up. Both Sue and Maggie had difficult putts to try and get birdies so the last hole was halved which meant a win for Lincolnshire.

Two Elton Furze players Liz Johnson and Pauline Hurley were next to play and with some very good chipping and putting ended their match on the 17th winning 2 and 1.

Ceilia Edwards (Northants County) and Anita Cordery (Elton Furze) stayed ahead of their opponents and were 2 up by the 11th hole, then it seemed that Jackie Rahill, past Captain of Lincolnshire Vets., suddenly read the greens and sunk some great putts which meant that they pulled the game back by winning the next 5 holes to finish the match 3 up and 2 to play.

The final pairing were Irene Rhodes (Northampton) and last minute replacement Captain Gina Evans ( Overstone Park) who had watched all the teams tee off on the first par 3 and had seen various shots go right, left and through the back so with nothing to lose and no idea what club to use she got out her favourite 6 iron and put it just one foot off the putting surface she then chipped on near enough to be given the hole so Northampton were one up. The match continued with the Lincolnshire pair winning the next two holes so coming to the par 3 4th Irene hit well over the hedge and landed safely on the green, another win for Northampton! The match continued with some good shots from both sides and coming to the 9th hole both Irene and Gina had a chance to sink putts for birdies but could only manage pars which Jackie from Lincolnshire matched. By the 16th hole the Lincolnshire pair were 2 up and with Barbara Cooper putting her 2nd shot straight over the pin the Northamptonshire  pair were up against it. Barbara then sunk the putt for a birdie so won the match 3 and 1.
