For the first match of the season the team travelled to Cleobury Mortimer, a pay and play golf centre which is actually in South Shropshire, a 2 hour drive from Northampton. In cold and blustery conditions, Northamptonshire held a strong Worcestershire team to a well earned 3-3 draw in the morning Greensomes.

However, as conditions improved in the afternoon, the Worcestershire team showed their class, winning in 5 out of the 6 4BBB matches. Particular mention should go to the team of Ian Dallas and Rob Clark who were the only Northamptonshire pair to win both their matches.

We were looked after very well by the catering team, who served up a fine steak pie and our “friendly” match lived up to its name by the mix and sociability of the teams after the match. Many thanks to their Captain, Anthony Hill, and the rest of the Worcestershire team for their hospitality.

Acknowledgement should also go to the Green Staff team, who had the course open despite having suffered very damp conditions and heavily diseased greens. Let’s hope that this past wet winter is an aberration, and the sun starts shining soon. We now move onto the friendly match at Bedfordshire next week.
