High Tension at Milton

Although it wasn't talked about much before the match, we were all aware that this match was critical for Lincolnshire. With three wins from three they would claim the East Midlands title with another victory, Losing would give Leicestershire a chance to take that away and in their case the Anglian League was still up for grabs.

The course was once again in excellent condition, with sun shining to make an excellent day for competitive golf. 

The morning foursomes were honours even after the first four games, with wins for Richard Cole & Alan Freeman and Roger Butler & Dominic Jessup, however Lincolnshire's strength in depth showed through with them taking the remaining points.

The afternoon commenced with Lincolnshire taking the first two games, but Northants proved strong in the middle order with wins for Gary Grimmitt, Brendon Moss and Dominic Jessup, Alistair Heslop and Dennis Mathers. Northants were edging ahead in the match with Roger Butler gaining a half. With an upset looking possible tensions began to show, with players gathering around the final green keen to watch the action and hear the results of the completed games. Once again Lincolnshire's lower order held steady taking the last four games, resulting in a tied match for the Anglian League, but 10 1/2 - 7 1/2 victory in the East Midland League thus securing their title.

The match was perfect illustration of how competitive Seniors golf can be, with games and matches turning on a single mistake or touch of genius.
