Friendly Seniors Match v Bedfordshire

On a warm and blessedly sunny day, the Northamptonshire team travelled down to Bedfordshire for the second friendly of the season. As seems the norm nowadays Bedfordshire put out their strongest team against us.

In the Foursomes, in the morning, as usual, Northampton held their own, coming in slightly down 2.5 to 3.5. There were notable performances by the teams of Tom Webster and Dean McIntyre, as well as Jim Tricklebank and Ted Dunn, who rolled back the years to win 1 up on the last. The half point was secured by Alan Freeman and Andrew Macdonald.

In the afternoon, the strength of the Bedfordshire team told and they won the afternoon matches by 9-3, the only win on our side coming from Gary Grimmit and Mick Barnett, with an honourable draw coming from Richard Jackson and Alan Lindsey. It was hard luck for Tom Webster and Dean McIntyre, losing on the last hole to a magnificent bunker shot by their opposing team.

All in all a very good day, with every member of the team contributing to the score but, once again, the afternoon fourballs were our undoing. In fairness, as well as being stronger handicap players, over half of the Bedfordshire team were playing on their home course which does give a big advantage.
