Our Northants Boys U-14 team finished 5th out of the10 county teams of 6 players battling to be Midland Champions following a tough day at windswept Stanton-On-The-Wolds on Sunday. In a close-fought competition Staffordshire edged Cambridgeshire with a total of 394 (best 5 gross scores) against Cambs 400. Our boys were aiming for an average of 80 after our Practice round but with a total of 414 we were a few shots off our target in extremely blustery conditions. Josh Bland's 78 included three birdies- two chipped in at 2 and 18, and straight-hitting Daniel Rees with a super steady 79 were our best scores; Sam Mayman's 84, Harry Odell's 86, plus 87 from both Ollie Golby and Max Edwards meant we beat Warwickshire on countback. A couple of misjudgements and some bad luck especially on the closing holes left our team thinking we could perhaps have finished a place or two higher but all credit to Staffordshire's Alfie Turner who shot a 3 under par 70 in the final group to clinch the title.
