We travelled to Nottinghamshire to play these 2 matches over 36 holes on a Sunday, playing at the stunning Coxmoor Golf Club. An overnight stay was necessary as we had early tee times.
At the end of last season we lost several players who had become ineligible because of age, so we fielded a relatively young team with undoubted ability but lacking in experience at this level. However all our players were looking forward to the challenge after our recent win away against Lincs.
In the Foursomes against Notts we found it tough going and although our players fought hard their opponents had local knowledge and payed exceptionally well. We found ourselves 3-1 down at lunch with our point coming from Captain Ollie and Adam who were 5&4 winners and played some very good golf.
In the Foursomes against Cambs we again found ourselves 3-1 down at lunch after Isaac and Riley won an epic tussle 2&1 against a good Cambs pairing. Riley is one of our younger players being only 13.
The players now had a bit more knowledge of the Course and the stunning, rapid greens and were determined to make a fight of it. However the experience of the two top Counties we were playing came to the fore and we were soundly beaten in the singles, 6-2 by Notts and 7-1 by Cambs.
Captain Ollie again showed his ability with a 2up win against Notts and a very narrow 1 down loss against one of Cambs best players. Ollie can't be far away from selection for the main County 2nd Team on a regular basis..
Our other wins came from Ryan who took no prisoners with a 9&7 win against Notts and a 3&2 win against an experienced Cambs player. Ryan played for the County 2nds in their season opener and he is showing confidence and maturity working as he does at a local Golf Club.
All our team played well and tried as hard as they could but basically were outclassed by 2 very strong County sides. We go again next week with the 6 Man County Championships being played at Belton Park Golf Club near Grantham and are optomistic of a decent display.
