Teenager Myers wins County Men’s Championships

The 18-year-old, whose older brothers Adam and Andrew both missed out on the county’s top prize when they were amateurs, was a model of consistency in the first round as he carded a round of 70.
Jointly leading with Mikey Chambers (Priors Hall), the plus-one handicapper started the afternoon with birdies on the third and fourth holes, before dropping back with big scores on holes six and eight.
However, the Northants County member held his nerve brilliantly over the closing stretch as he birdied the 14th, 16th and 17th holes before safely parring the last for a winning total of 137.
Myers said: “It was good to play a course in really good condition and play well. I was steady in the morning, but started off the second round in good form.
“Although I had a purple patch approaching the turn, I finished strongly. At that stage, I thought I was in with a shout.
“When I hit it to 10 foot on the last for birdie, I knew I had a couple of putts at least for victory. I pulled my birdie putt, but it was nice to have a little tap in for the title.”

Home club member James Northern came through to grab second position as he fired six birdies in an afternoon round of 66.
The four-handicapper’s net total of 131 lifted him six shots clear of David Gottsch (Brampton Heath) in the race for the net championship.

The team prize went to Priors Hall as Chambers combined with brothers Michael and Callum Farr, who finished third in the overall gross category after shooting a final round of 69.
Seventeen-year-old Callum Farr went into the event in buoyant mood after being called up to represent England for the first time in the Irish Boys Open Amateur Championship at the end of this month.
